This part of Poland belonged to Germany in 1883 so the line was built to the German industrial gauge of 900mm to transport goods to and from the Gniezno sugar factory. The local Witkowo council bought the railway from the sugar company in 1893 and it was subsequently rebuilt to 600mm gauge. Gniezno district authority took control in 1927 and the line was re-gauged again to 750mm in 1951. Since 2003 it has operated as a tourist railway but only as far as Witkaowo as track on the remaining stretch to Anatazewo is unusable. There are two 0-8-0 steam locomotives of the Px48 Class but only one is operational. Visited in March 2012 on the Railtrail Polish Explorer tour.
